Experience the raw beauty and exceptional bird power of Bulgaria
Bulgaria is a small Eastern European country with a wide range of landscapes ranging from mountains, canyons, coast and bordering the famous Danube Delta. Because of these aspects and location it is an eldorado for the nature photographer. Bulgaria is one of the top countries in Europe where the diversity of wildlife is concerned; there are no less than 416 bird species, 11 mammals and 37 species of reptiles. No less than 35% of the land surface is covered by the Natura200 standard. There is something to get there so we thought of Wildpix Travel and thus we offer a truly incredibly beautiful photo tour.
In the middle of the Rusenski Lom National Park you can pick up your photo heart with species like Wielewaal, forest monkeys, free-range eaters, bee-eaters, hopping and much more. Our colleague will guide you to the best places in the areas in and around the beautiful canyon that forms the basis of this unique area. In several places you can see the cliffs of the canyon reaching up to 100 meters and together with the rest of the area belong to the Unesco world heritage. So you see only minimal human presence here; that is limited by farmers, very small villages and here and there a fish farmer who has been here for decades and ... attracts birds.
The cliffs form ideal living and breeding grounds for vultures, owls and eagles, while the wetlands offer large numbers of water birds a perfect biotope.
The area is famous for its largest population of European wheel-races; more than 200 breeding pairs find their way here every year and thus form one of the top goals of this trip.
We are not very far from Ruse; a larger city on the Romanian border. You can fly to Bucharest in Romania (our advice), Sofia or Varna where we pick you up with a taxi that will take you to this wondrous area. You stay here in a very nice hotel in a small village. The wheels and nightingales bring you to sleep and awaken you. Can it be even more beautiful?

Description of the possibilities:
We know that we offer Wildpix Travel mainly travel with fixed and luxurious photo shelters. How beautiful and special this is; we know that there are also many people who really enjoy the pure and pioneering aspect of photographing from shelters and the indentation at moments and opportunities. We are going to offer that in part with this trip, entirely in your favor.
In order to be able to take full advantage of the possibilities of that moment, we make extensive use of mobile shelters here. Our colleague is constantly looking for good locations which he makes an inventory of opportunities and best approach.
We also have a number of semi-permanent photo huts that may be called simple but very effective. These are huts high on the cliffs for, for example, the eagle buzzards, with a breeding colony of bee-eaters or scavengers, or in the form of a tree house with ring-trees. But very nice results can be booked from the floating huts we use in a shallow lake full of photogenic water plants and species such as killer, forest monkey but also ring snakes and terrapins.
We also use the mobile shelter that you normally can not drive to narrow roads along colorful but especially bird-rich areas. We also have a photo hut with water bowl; the so-called drinking station. For this we depend on the weather because it works best in dry hot periods.
RESPONSIBLE WITH NEST PHOTOGRAPHY
As you can see, nest photography is used here. Of course we are very aware of Wildpix that this form of photography is disturbing for some people. We are also very concerned about this and always want to prevent disruption, that is one of our basic principles in all journeys. That is why this has been well researched.
You should know that this trip involves a lot of preparation and knowledge before the huts are placed near a potential nest. They are simple structures, well camouflaged, which are placed before the breeding season in places where our colleagues know nests from previous years that are often reused. Thus the birds are not disturbed and quickly get used to their presence.
Through years of experience, the guides have noticed that it does not disturb the birds at all and there is still no nest attempt failed by this system. This allows us to offer these cabins with peace of mind.
Daily schedule:
We work in two parts of the day. In the early morning you can shoot until about 11 or 12 o'clock in the early morning, after which you return to the hotel where a delicious lunch awaits you. It is time for relaxation until about three hours after which our guide will pick you up again for the afternoon / evening session. One location is closer than the other but the furthest is about 45 minutes drive from the hotel. In most cases, however, you are more at the desired location earlier.
Because of the personal guidance of our colleague, this trip is only possible with small groups of 2 to a maximum of 4 people. If you know your photo sizes well and can see each other through a door of a photo, it is possible to travel with up to four people.
You go with the people you choose yourself unless you travel alone and possibly have another person on the spot.
We are as flexible as possible to meet your wishes during the following travel periods. In fact, you can decide for yourself when, how long and what you want to photograph during your photo week. Although the emphasis in this trip is on birds, you get the freedom to photograph reptiles, flora, insects, butterflies or landscapes.
Hotel.
You stay in a small but cozy family hotel, in a rural location on the edge of a small village. The hotel has only eight rooms with bathroom and toilet, wifi, television and separate beds. There is also a small swimming pool on the property which can provide relaxation and cooling on hot days.
In Bulgaria people are accustomed to eating hot food twice a day prior to a delicious fresh salad. You can of course state your wishes in this.
In recent years, the young Orioles came out between 30 May and 3 June. Because of the activities, that is a very good period. This is only an indication based on an average and therefore subject to change.
You will receive a more specific overview of the options per period for the travel information to be requested.
Planning and duration of your trip:
Day 1:
Arrival in Bucharest and transit by taxi to the hotel.
Go through the possibilities of the moment and plan of action.
In case of an early arrival of your flight you can still have half a photo day.
Day 2 to 7:
Five days of bird photography.
After a quick breakfast departure to the locations. The best photo times are between 6.00 and 11.00 and between 16.00 and 20.00. Interim Lunch and dinner at the hotel.
Day 8:
Return journey to Bucharest and return flight.
In case of a late return flight, a morning session is possible.

TRAVEL GUIDANCE
You travel on your own to, preferably, Bucharest where you will be met and taken to the hotel by taxi. The taxi ride takes about 2 to 3 hours, depending on the degree of border controls, which are still done manually here.
On the spot you will be guided to the last detail throughout your journey by our colleague Iliyan. Iliyan is very customer friendly and you would almost say that no wish is too crazy for him. He speaks reasonable English and if you speak quietly and clearly the communication is fine.

What if I have to cancel my trip?
In case of cancellation you should always inform us as soon as possible. Since we also have to pay cancellation costs with our partners, in some cases we also pay a cancellation fee.
